Un condamné à mort s'est échappé, France, 1956, 95 min., original version with Italian subtitles, directed by Robert Bresson, starring François Leterrier, Charles Le Clainche and Maurice Beerblock
A French partisan, jailed by the Nazis under the occupation, plans the escape that will save him from death in minute detail. Truffaut, when still a young man, called this "Bresson's best movie and the most significant French film of recent years", preferring it even to the work of Renoir, Ophuls and Becker whom he admired immensely.
