(Italy / Yugoslavia 1970) directed by Francesco Rosi, starring Gian Maria Volonté, Alain Cuny, Pier Paolo Capponi color, 101', 35mm
During the First World War, officer Sassu is displaced to the Altopiano di Asiago, where a sadistic general throws his soldiers into the fray. Wiped out by enemy fire, the troops violently revolt, led by officer Sassu. Loosely based on Emilio Lussu's novel A Year on the Plateau, Rosi's film was criticised at length on its release and the director was charged with libel. The film was rehabilitated only many years later and finally hailed as an anti-war masterpiece.
