(UK 1936) directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring John Gielgud, Madeleine Carroll, Peter Lorre
b/w, 83', 35mm original language with Italian subtitles
During the First World War a British writer, presumed dead, is enlisted by the Secret Service to go to Switzerland and assassinate an enemy spy. He is helped by Elsa, a young woman posing as his wife, and by a killer nicknamed "The General". Among the lesser-known films of Hitch's British period, it is full of the typical Hitchockian combination of irony and suspense. The chocolate factory sequence is a true highlight of Hitchcock's art.
