(Italy 1943) directed by Luchino Visconti, starring Clara Calamai, Massimo Girotti, Juan De Landa
b/w, 140', 35mm restored original cut
A tramp reaches an inn by chance near the Po river. The owner befriends him and offers him a job, but the tramp becomes the lover of the owner's wife and together they plan to kill him in order to get his life insurance. The first feature film by Visconti quickly became the symbol of the rebirth of the Italian film industry, wiping away years of fascist rhetoric with bitter and transgressive realism. The film was mangled by the censors more than once, and is here presented in a restored uncut version.
