A penetrating and merciless portrait of the Sicilian aristocracy as it tackles the difficult transition to a united Italy.  A stunningly beautiful fresco in its scenery, its costumes and its soundtrack, and with a cast on top form, this film deserves credit for shining the spotlight on Federico De Roberto's novel, one of the few masterpieces of Italian prose to have emerged from the 19th century.
