directed by Piero Nelli. Italy 1952 (74 min)
This minor and sadly neglected gem of Italian Neo-Realist film-making examines the first war of independence from the standpoint of grassroots participation, tracking a ragtag troop of soldiers as they wander in the fog in search of an invisible foe. Taking a potshot at the rhetoric of official history which inevitably turns men into heroes, this bizarre war film highlights the psychology of normal men, prompting reflection on the social consquences that every conflict brings with it.
