directed by Roberto Rossellini. Italy 1961 (106 min)
Rossellini's contribution to the centenary year was this extraordinarily anti-rhetorical film on the expedition of Garibaldi's Mille, a stringently objective reconstruction of the events that helped to shape a united Italy. The movie dwells at length on the human side of the Garibaldi epic in the attempt to rid it of the aura of legend, allowing historical reconstruction to don the bare bones of realistic reportage by focusing on seemingly minor, everyday and even anti-heroic detail.
