Highly individual writer-director Mario Soldati reaches maturity in this acknowledged masterpiece of pre-Neo-Realist movie-making, translating the amorous and existential conflicts narrated by Fogazzaro against the backdrop of the struggle against Austria, into a film of lofty formal beauty.  The pefect settings, in which the landscape reflects both a mood and a mindset, add dramatic intensity to the story and to the superb acting of the leading players, including Alida Valli whom we see here in her first dramatic role.
