The grotesque characters in this masterpiece always meet for lunch but never get round to actually eating it.  Faithful to the surrealism of his early days, an extraordinarily effective Buñuel rips the mask off a spoiled, corrupt and hypocritical society in this movie, which won an Oscar for the Best Foreign Film.
