A cutting portrait of a static society and a clear parable of Spain as it was at the time, told through the destruction of every glimmer of charity in a young orphan.  The first film directed by Buñuel in Spain after 30 years in exile, it won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Fesival, but it was banned in Spain and attacked by the Vatican for its subversive strength.
