(High Hopes, UK 1988) directed by Mike Leigh, starring Philip Davis, Ruth Sheen and Lesley Manville, colour, 112 min., 35mm, Italian version
Love and politics in 1980s London. Cyril and Shirley are a couple of old-style socialists having to cope with the tribulations of everyday life but also with Cyril’s sister, a neurotic social climbing housewife, and with their new yuppie neighbours… Beneath a comic veneer, Leigh manages better than most to combine anger and tenderness in this account of the deep-seated social malaise that wormed its way under the skin of British society in the Thatcher years.
Film introduced by Anna Maria Pasetti
