A pistol shot

directed by Renato Castellani. Italy, 1942, 92 min.

Taking his cue from a tale by Pushkin, Castellani translates into sumptuous images the story of two czarist officers who challenge each other to a duel over the love of a woman. This film marked the debut of one of the Italian cinema's most refined directors of the 1940s and '50s, rarely remembered today but absolutely worth rediscovering.
