curated by CineAgenzia for Internazionale
With some 200 screenings in over 20 cities, the last edition certainly confirmed the growing popularity of the "Internazionale documentary" tour which, after a pre-premiere at the Internazionale fest in Ferrara, traditionally kicks off from the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. With documentaries there usually aren't any prizes for the leading players, yet it might be appropriate to imagine one for the 2014 edition which addresses current issues through enlightening and unforgettable personal stories more than it has done in any previous year. The prize might legitimately go to such well-known figures as Greek left-wing leader Alexis Tsipras for Hope on the Line; or to Pulitzer award-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas who turns himself in as an illegal immigrant in the United States in Documented; or even to the Internet's enfant prodige and activist Aaron Swartz. Other legitimate candidates might include, surprisingly, Ala'a Basatneh, the extremely young web coordinator of the uprising in Syria, for her #chicagoGirl; or Matt Van Dyke, a shy 27-year-old American who ends up incredibly taking part in the Libyan revolution. Or else it might go to an entire cast, as indeed occasionally does happen at festivals. It might go to the brave Colombian miners in Marmato who have to cope with the consequences of the rocketing price of gold on the world's money markets, or to the immigrants in Days of Hope who dream of, and ultimately have to face, the Mediterranean crossing and the fate awaiting them in Europe. Or in a controversial but not unprecedented choice, it might go to a player whom we never actually see on screen, only hearing her voice - the firm but captivating voice of Ms. Lauryn Hill as, in Concerning Violence, she rereads a text that is more topical than ever, Frantz Fanon's I dannati della terra, looking back at Africa's recent past to understand the West's future.
