IBBY Italia and the Palazzo delle Esposizioni are proud to present the second bibliograpical exhibition in the inernational project entitled Silent books. Final destination Lampedusa, a project which first saw the light of day in 2013 with the aim of putting together a selection of the best silent books published throughout the world, for girls and boys on the island of Lampedusa.
From 11 June to 10 July, in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni's Forum, you will be able to leaf through more than fifty books chosen by the IBBY sections in the eighteen countries that have subscribed to the project. These books provide a sweeping overview of the world of silent book publishing in the five continents, testifying to their richness, to their originality and to their narrative force. Of particular interest are the five titles that make up the Honour list proclaimed by a jury of international experts at the Bologna Children's Book Fair in 2015, and the special mentions awarded by the Autorità Garante per l’infanzia e l’adolescenza (the Infancy and Adolescence Ombudsman), by the Palazzo delle Esposizioni and by Amnesty International.
The event will be further enhanced by a special workshop for adults and children at 5.00 pm on 18 June, prompting you to immerse yourself in a world of pure images capable of telling stories and of building bridges between distant worlds.
The travelling exhibition will be setting off from the exhibition venue in Rome on its journey across Italy and on into the world, following in the footsteps of the first edition, which has already been hosted in nine Italian cities and which kicked off its international tour at the IBBY International Conference in Mexico City in September last year.
The second edition will also add further material to the documentation and research collection hosted by the Art Bookshelf, which will remain accessible to the general public and to scholars and experts in order to disseminate awareness of this special area of publishing and of the illustrated book's potential as a tool for cultural mediation and for an initial education to the visual world.
The members of the Rome IBBY Committee promoting the event are: Elena Fierli (Palazzo delle Esposizioni), Giulia Franchi (Palazzo delle Esposizioni), Bianca Lazzaro (Donzelli publishers), Maddalena Lucarelli (Press Office), Della Passarelli (Sinnos publishers), Cristina Paterlini (Biblioteca Europea), Deborah Soria (Ottimomassimo and IBBY Italia board) and Paola Vassalli (Curator).
