Spot! 20 minutes in a work of art
guided interpretation
from 8 May @ 7.00 pm
for all age groups
A new edition of Spot!, a rendez-vous at cocktail hour offering a guide to the interpretation of a work of art, has been devised to run concurrently with the Empire State. New York art now exhibition at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni. It comprises a series of three encounters designed to explore a city, its images, its icons and its symbols through the work of three artists from different generations. The event, which will be conducted by the Palazzo delle Esposizioni's senior curator Daniela Lancioni, is scheduled to commence on Wednesday 8 May.
Wednesday 8 May 7.00 pm
Moyra Davey, Les Goddesses, 2011
A 60-minute video in which the artist narrates and composes a catalogue of her life comprising memories, musings, quotes and a text which replaces narrative consistency with a mixture of observations, literary pieces and thoughts. Davey speaks, hesitates and stumbles in what is a clear exercise in memory and recompilation.
Wednesday 12 June 7.00 pm
Adrian Piper, Everything #21, 2010-2012
Four blackboards on each of which the phrase "Everything will be taken away" is repeated over and over again: Adrian Piper introduces a universe of memories, impositions and punishments, but the phrase the visitor reads is neither intimidatory nor an imposition; it is simply a recording of what is to come. And it will have a different meaning for each and every individual.
Wednesday 10 July 7.00 pm
LaToya Ruby Frazier, Gray Area. The Professional Building Doctor's Offices, 2011
LaToya Ruby Frazier's crystal clear black and white photographs offer the visitor a bleak vision of Braddock, a small town just outside Pittsburgh where the prosperity brought by the steel industry is now nothing but a distant memory. In her Gray Area series, the artist's merciless gaze focuses on the demolition of the town's hospital, a symbol of the breakdown of society and a source of unemployment.
