Between 12 February and 1 May, National Geographic Italia is holding "The Colours of the World", its latest major photographic exhibition, at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome.
The exhibition features 95 evocative, high-impact photographs that have never appeared in the magazine.
The photographs on display are grouped into four colours.
Red is the colour of the earth, fire and communities; of habits and customs, women, children and men. It is the colour of the heart, blood and passion.
Green represents the green world in all of its manifestations - green as the colour of today and tomorrow, green as the colour of hope. It is the colour of nature, vegetation, of life itself.
White: the immaculateness of places affected by global warming, of the animals whose survival is at risk, of innocence and purity.
Blue: the colour of water and the sky, of the seas and its denizens, of the joy of living and peace.
These four contrasting and evocative colours sum up the present and future of this planet, the strength and weakness of nature and the animal kingdom, and human humility, pride, joy and pain.
The Italian and international magazines' greatest photographers take us on an amazing photographic journey.
Guglielmo Pepe, who curated the exhibition, says: "This exhibition emerges from a desire to show how National Geographic photographers have succeeded in interpreting life on our planet through the power of colour. Colours show us women, children and men living in countries near and far; what life is like for people who have to combat hunger, poverty, war and disease; how animals manage to survive upheavals in their habitats; and the effects of climate change on the environment. Colour also portrays the Earth at unique moments: people in moments of intense happiness, the fantastic diversity of other species, and the extraordinary beauty of nature."
Works by forty-eight photographers (four of whom are Italian) are on show at the exhibition: Sam Abell, Lynsey Addario, William Albert Allard, Stephen Alvarez, Ira Block, Robert Clark, Jodi Cobb, Bill Curtsinger, Peter Essick, Melissa Farlow, Alessandro Gandolfi, George Grall, David Alan Harvey, Chris Johns, Lynn Johnson, Ed Kashi, Karen Kasmauski, Tim Laman, Brian Lanker, Sarah Leen, Gerd Ludwig, Pascal Maitre, Manoocher, Steve McCurry, James Nachtwey, Michael Nichols, Paul Nicklen, Flip Nicklin, Randy Olson, Carsten Peter, Antonio Politano, Reza, Jim Richardson, Sandro Santioli, Joel Sartore, Shaul Schwarz, Stephanie Sinclair, Brian J.
