A legendary director, who with just a few films left an indelible mark in the imaginations of spectators worldwide, Andrei Tarkovsky – arguably more than any other – was able to transform film into a tool for inner exploration, a search for the absolute. An achievement which is even more remarkable considering the context in which it took place, namely that of the hostility of the Soviet regime which eventually culminated in a painful exile. On the 35th anniversary of his death, this review spans his entire career, beginning with his earliest productions such as Ivan’s Childhood or the rarely seen The Steamroller and the Violin, his diploma film from VGIK, up to his mature masterpieces Andrei Rublev, Solaris, Mirror, Stalker and, shot outside the Soviet Union, Nostalghia and The Sacrifice. Tarkovsky’s extraordinary filmography will be accompanied by a reflection on the transcendent in cinema, understood not so much (or not only) as a path towards an idea of spirituality. It is rather an unorthodox investigation into an art form which – in various historical moments and countries – has grappled with the “completely Other” described by Rudolf Otto, an attempt to translate into images the discovery of something which eludes rational understanding. From Bergman to Dreyer, from Bresson to Pasolini via Herzog, Godard, Kieślowski, Kubrick and many others, the programme will feature some of the great masters of Twentieth Century film. Although often profoundly different from one another, these are all artists whose visionary talent has pushed the cinema medium towards new representational frontiers.
