(USA 1964) directed by Roger Corman, starring Vincent Price, Jane Asher, color, duration: 91’, DCP Original version, Italian subtitles
The tyrannical Prospero, a medieval devil-worshipping prince, oppresses the village peasants, but when the contagion of the Red Death plague arrives, it will not be enough for him to lock himself up in the castle. Among the best-loved and most successful of Corman's films based on Poe (from the title story but also from the lesser-known short story Hop-Frog), it is perfectly balanced between eerie atmosphere and philosophical depth bathed in Nicolas Roeg's evocative cinematography.
