directed by Billy Wilder, starring Ginger Rogers, Ray Milland, Rita Johnson, USA 1942, 101 min., b/w, DCP, original version with Italian subtitles
Wilder’s first American film as a director was already a story of disguise and ambiguity. A beguiling Ginger Rogers, an icon of innocent beauty, poses as an under-age minor and bewitches a military academy instructor. After his debut as a director in France and becoming one of Hollywood’s most successful screenplay writers, Wilder went back behind the camera with one of the sharpest and most mischievous comedies of the early ‘40s, a subtle provocation aimed at a country enslaved by suffocating convention.
