directed by Billy Wilder, starring Ray Milland, Jane Wyman, Phillip Terry, USA 1945, 101 min., b/w, DCP, original version with Italian subtitles
A tormented writer sinks his frustration in alcohol, eventually plummeting into an endless abyss. Wilder’s most dramatic movie reflects his pessimistic view of the human condition and still shocks us today with its crudely realistic details, the way it explores tormented obsession with no holds barred, and its memorable scenes of frenzied delirium. The film won the Palme d’Or and best actor award at the first edition of the Cannes Film Festival and fully four Oscars for best film, director, leading actor and screenplay.
