Stalag 17

3 december 2024

directed by Billy Wilder, starring William Holden, Don Taylor, Otto Preminger, USA 1953, 120 min., b/w, DCP, original version with Italian subtitles

American noncommissioned officers in a German POW camp discover that one of their number is a spy. Like Chaplin and Lubitsch before him, Wilder addresses Nazism by combining drama and comedy to lampoon human bestiality. Having seen part of his family disappear into concentration camps, he was well aware of the fact that the most threatening aspect of power is its obtuseness, and that a weapon to counter that obtuseness is by poking fun at its “triviality”. William Holden’s masterly performance won him an Oscar.
