Francesca Fabiani and Gabi Scardi
The role of photography has been expanding for decades, from mere record and testimonial to a form of expression associated with artists' individual poetics often used within specific project frameworks. In the course of this encounter we will be analysing curatorial projects in which photography plays a central role. Francesca Fabiani and Gabi Scardi – the one with institutional experience, the other from an independent career – will be illustrating examples of different photographic practices.
Francesca Fabiani, a museum curator and conservator, is currently Director of Contemporary Photographic Projects at the ICCD (MiBACT) in Rome. From 2003 to 2015 she was Curator of Photography at the MAXXI, starting the museum's collection and curating exhibitions, commissioning projects, research and publications. She worked with the Direzione per l’Arte Contemporanea from 2015 to 2017, developing programme lines in support of photography that led to a number of projects. She is a lecturer in the postgraduate course in photography at the Fondazione Modena Arti visive. She is a member of the SISF's board of directors.
Gabi Scardi is a contemporary art critic and curator whose career focuses on the most recent artistic trends and on the relationship between art and tangential disciplines. She concerns herself with cultural policies and has been involved in public projects for many years. She has worked with museums and institutions both in Italy and abroad, including the Provincia di Milano, the Pac, the Museo del Novecento, the Pirelli Hangar Bicocca in Milan; the MAXXI in Rome; the Venice Biennale; the Royal Academy in, London; and the Louisiana Museum in Copenhagen. She has been artistic director of the nctm e l’arte project since 2011.
