An abundance of eminent figures appears throughout the Science of Rome exhibition itinerary. Yet the names are almost only of men. For many centuries, science was a “world without women”. This is hardly surprising, given that in Europe women did not have the right to vote until the Twentieth Century and were not formally admitted to university until the end of the Nineteenth Century. Things are different today, but how different exactly? In some countries women are still denied an education. Even where women are treated equally, in theory at least, it would appear that in the scientific ‘citadel’ prejudice against them endures.
