The Birds
directed by Alfred Hitchcock, USA, 1963, 120 min., original version with Italian subtitles
The birds in a small town on the coast south of San Francisco inexplicably start to attack people. Over 60 years have gone by since this masterpiece revolutionised the depiction of man’s collective fear of nature and its unfathomable mysteries. Hitchcock’s most metaphysical film is a kind of mise-en-scène of anguish itself, an implacable trap that leaves us prey to the arbitrary and the unpredictable, forcing us to lay bare our weaknesses and our fragility.
