(Dies irae, Denmark 1943) directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, starring Thorkild Roose, Lisbeth Movin, B/W, duration: 93’, 35mm Original version, Italian subtitles
In 1623, the young wife of a Protestant pastor and his son from a previous marriage have a clandestine affair. Because of the repressive mood that oppresses the country, the woman is suspected of being a witch. Filmed during the Nazi occupation of Denmark in an almost ascetic style, this parable about intolerance and the ambiguity of human nature is one of the purest expressions of Dreyer's genius.
