Berlin, 1948. The United States sends a congressional committee headed up by a lady senator of the utmost integrity to supervise US troops’ moral conduct. A master in dodging the tight net of the Hays Code that censored every Hollywood movie of the time, Wilder comes up with a superbly light comedy that actually adopts a cynical, mocking gaze to poke fun at the hypocrisy and respectability of the period. Marlene Dietrich’s songs are quite simply breathtaking.
